A powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale has struck the Indonesian island of Flores and several neighbouring regions. The epicentre of the quake last weekend was in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (East Nusa Tenggara), specifically in the district of Nagekeo. The quake affected numerous areas, including Manggarai, Sikka, Lembata and Ngada.
According to official figures, at least 47 people have lost their lives and more than 100 have been injured. Around 2,000 people have been forced to leave their homes. More than 1,000 residential buildings, roads and public facilities such as schools and clinics have been damaged. Many of those affected are currently seeking shelter in emergency accommodation, as further aftershocks are feared.
Plan International is active in the disaster-stricken area: teams are distributing urgently needed relief supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, water and hygiene items. They are also providing psychosocial support, particularly for children and girls. A key focus is on protecting children from violence, as well as ensuring access to clean water and education. Staff are coordinating the emergency response closely with local authorities and other aid organisations.
