On 10 August 2026, a severe earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck western Colombia. The epicentre was near San José del Palmar in the department of Chocó. The quake was clearly felt across large parts of the country.

According to initial reports, more than 170 people lost their lives and several thousand people were injured. Numerous buildings were damaged or destroyed, and many communities had to be evacuated. The full extent of the damage is not yet clear.

Plan International is working in the affected regions of Chocó and Valle del Cauca and is currently assessing the impact of the earthquake and the specific needs for aid on the ground. Potential emergency relief measures will focus, amongst other things, on emergency shelter, clean water and food, as well as the protection of children. Psychosocial support and educational programmes can also help children and their families during this crisis.
