Across the world, 650 million women and girls were married as children. Despite global commitments, 12 million girls are still forced into marriage every year — that’s one girl every 2-3 seconds.
Early and forced marriage steals girls’ childhoods, cuts short their education, and exposes them to violence, poverty and lifelong inequality. It is driven by poverty, harmful gender norms, weak laws, crises and lack of education. At the current pace, it will take 300 years to end child marriage.
